Supporting Sustainable Rendering: Hydroflux Partners with Taranaki Byproducts
July 16, 2026
Taranaki Byproducts, part of the SBT Group, is one of New Zealand’s leading rendering businesses, converting animal by-products from meat processing into valuable products including tallow and meat and bone meal.

To support increased production and future environmental requirements, Taranaki Byproducts recently engaged Hydroflux to upgrade its existing wastewater treatment plant. Following a detailed assessment of the facility, Hydroflux recommended the installation of a HyDAF® HD100 dissolved air flotation system together with a HUBER Q-PRESS® sludge dewatering system.
The HyDAF® removes suspended solids from the wastewater while allowing beneficial biomass to be returned to the biological treatment process where appropriate. The Q-PRESS® efficiently dewaters excess waste activated sludge, reducing sludge handling and disposal costs.

As part of the project, Hydroflux also undertook detailed process modelling using EnviroSim BioWin® to evaluate the performance of the existing biological treatment system. The modelling assessed both current and future operating conditions and confirmed a staged upgrade strategy capable of accommodating higher hydraulic and organic loads while improving nutrient removal and maintaining compliance with future discharge requirements.
Commenting on the project, Hydroflux CEO Mathew Foster said:
“We’re proud to be working with Taranaki Byproducts on a project that supports both sustainable food production and improved environmental outcomes. By combining detailed process modelling with proven treatment technologies, we’ve developed a staged upgrade strategy that delivers immediate performance improvements while providing a clear pathway for future expansion.”
